Abstract


There are many studies on the change of alveolar bone after extraction. The socket preservation is needed to make a suitable environment for maintaining soft tissue and hard tissue. Recently lots of bone substitutes have been developed and used widely in the market. However, the study of porcine bone mineral is rare. This study report a case of ridge preservation using porcine bone mineral. A 54-year-old male patient had been referred to Dept. of Periodontology in Veterans Health Service Medical Center. The mandibular 2nd molar was periodontally compromised. The ridge preservation using DPBM (THE Graft, Purgo, Seoul, Korea) and crosslinked collagen membrane (Ossix-plus, Datum, Telrad, Israel) was conducted on the day of extraction. After 7 months, the biopsy was harvested at the time of implant placement. The prosthesis was delivered 4 months after implant placement. The histologic and radiographic evaluation was done. Histologic specimen showed diverse bone maturity and the formation process without inflammatory response or fibrous encapsulation. Also, osteoid tissue and woven bone, and osteoblast adjacent to mature bone were observed. In the histomorphometric assessment, the proportion of remained graft material, new bone, and soft tissue are 16.4%, 37.4%, and 46.1% respectively. The marginal bone showed the stable level for 1-year follow-up in the radiographics. This case showed that the ridge preservation using porcine bone mineral and cross-linked collagen membrane can be one of good modalities for the treatment of damaged socket. More cases are needed for the further evaluation.
